Synopsis

Surrounded by people, Michael is alone.

Along with the rest of a North Georgia town that survived a deadly worldwide plague, Michael’s forced to wear a steel ring around his waist wherever he goes. He’s seen cohabitation banned. Marriages dissolved. Families torn apart.

But he’s a good soldier, supporting the leader’s draconian policies — until he learns an explosive secret about her that threatens to destroy the delicate balance they’ve achieved between safety and order.

Now, Michael must enlist help to confront the awful truth about the town of Alessandra, and the fate of what may be the last human colony on Earth.

Sneak peek

Her lips wrapped tightly around the pistol’s steel barrel, Theresa shifted her weight from her left knee as it began to ache against the frost-laded concrete on a cold February evening. Stretching her eyes to their peripheral limits, she tried to catch a glimpse of her friend Lucas, lying motionless beside her, a welt beginning to rise from his temple.

“It’s time, Audrey!” Paul held the gun firm, swiveling his head to the left to make eye contact, trying to make his voice heard. “We can’t keep pussying out. Say the word, and I’ll take care of them. You can just go back to pondering life’s mysteries, or whatever it is you do in your room.”

Audrey took slow steps toward Paul, holding his gaze. Staying under control in situations like this was why she’d risen to where she was, holding sway over what might be the final organized colony of humans left on Earth. She’d taken them this far on smarts, some guile, and repressive, unquestioned control. Keeping Paul around was good for her, she thought. He wasn’t afraid to challenge her, and make her think about why she was making the decisions she was making. At times like this, she questioned that, though.

“How can you crave death, Paul?” Audrey took two more steps and stopped, close enough for her frozen breath’s billow to crawl up Paul’s face as it dissipated into the air. “Have you not seen enough? We may be the last of God’s children. We have to protect each other.”

“They put everyone in danger. Everyone!” Paul punctuated the last word with a jab of the barrel deeper into Theresa’s mouth, bouncing it off both rows of her teeth and leaving shards of enamel on her tongue. “It’s fucking selfish. We can’t just let people defy the rules in order to get a hand job or whatever crap they were trying to pull, and walk away. What kind of message does that send? The virus spreads through touch, and if it makes it in these walls, we’re all fucked. You want that? How about you, whatever your name is?”

Theresa shook her head and mumbled incoherently, as she shifted her weight back to her left knee. Both her hands were beginning to go numb from the ropes tied more tightly than necessary around her wrists.

Paul smiled and turned back to Audrey. “See? Princess here agrees with me. I think that settles it; you’re outvoted, two to one. Pretty sure the big guy on the ground isn’t gonna be weighing in right now.”

“Take the gun out of her mouth.” Audrey took a step back. “You know this isn’t how we do things. Order without violence. Remember?”

Paul rolled his eyes and yanked the gun back; Theresa gasped for air, saliva dripping from her lips. Paul pulled the slide back on the pistol, loading a round into the chamber, then pulled her hair to lift her head back up and jammed the gun back between her lips. Her eyes grew, and she mumbled nervously.

Sneak peek

Within two months of the virus taking hold, whole cities started going dark; within four months, federal and local governments had lost control of what populace was left. By the six-month mark from the first mentions of the plague in the media, that same media was mostly blacked out around the world; in Alessandra, they were either alone or forgotten by the rest of civilization.

It was at this point that Dr. Richard Giles told her he completed his research, and determined that the virus was spread via physical touch. He said he thought other doctors were missing this because they were probably too overwhelmed to study touch in a comprehensive manner. He also said his study determined there was reason to believe the virus could lay dormant for some period of time, so people could be asymptomatic but still contagious. Audrey hailed this as a major breakthrough but, by this time, they had no way to communicate with anyone else. Still, the information had the potential to save Alessandra. She determined that keeping people from touching each other might keep the town safe. With cities and towns throughout the world being decimated and abandoned, anything was worth a shot.

She found, though, that this was an impossible policy to enforce. How do you tell people they can’t touch the ones they love? Even if you tell them, what do you do to prevent it from happening? She knew almost immediately it would require a series of changes that would be received harshly by the citizens, and could crush whatever mandate to leadership she had. But she also knew it was absolutely necessary, and she could be a hero if she could sell them on that idea.

“I know this isn’t what you all want to hear,” she said from a podium in the town square one chilly January evening, as the plague’s progress brought it closer and closer to their isolated town. “But I’m tasked with maintaining order in this town and protecting its citizens from threats, and sometimes that means telling you difficult truths. The fact is we’re still here right now, and that’s more than most of the world can say as I stand before you today. Remaining here is going to be trying on even the strongest of us. It’s going to take collective sacrifice. It’s going to take cooperation and brotherhood. Determination and grit. You’re going to have to want a life more than you want this particular life, for the time being. You’re going to have to accept changes you never thought you’d have to accept, and be part of something greater than yourself, greater than your family, greater than everything you already know. That’s the price to be part of a rebirth. I want you all to follow me there.

“What doesn’t kill me makes me stronger. My friends, I believe that’s true, today more than ever. I stand before you today to bear witness that we can do this. We can live. We can fight another day, and come out the other side of this nightmare stronger, more together than ever before. Will you follow me? Will you be a part of this?”

Sneak peek

Now this is the perfect wake up call. A pair of lips wrapped around my cock, sucking nice and tight, the slurping sound of suction drifting around the room. God, I love my life. Endless amounts of pussy just fall right into my lap. Hell, I’m not going to fucking complain. Of course, it doesn’t hurt that I’m the best quarterback the league has, and I’m on a team that has won three Super Bowls. I fist the girl’s hair in my hands and groan, holding it tight, and start fucking her delicious mouth.

“Fuck,” I mutter, breathing roughly. She continues bobbing up and down my cock, her tongue working me over, before taking me fully into her mouth once more. I close my eyes and enjoy. What was her name again? Melinda? Rita? Hell, I can’t remember. Instead, the nickname I use for each girl I have a drunk night of passion with spills from my lips.

“Babe, I’m so damn close to losing it.” She looks up at me and grins. The blonde bombshell staring at me has my eyes go wide with panic. What in the actual fuck?

“Lauren?” I hiss at my best friend’s baby sister. “What the hell? What are you doing in here, in my room?” What the fuck is she thinking?

She bites her lip and blushes. “Umm…” I put my hand up and she shuts her mouth. I’m so fucking dead. Did I screw her last night, too? I try to think back, but my head starts pounding. Shit!

“What are you doing in here, Lauren? Please, tell me…we didn’t, umm…you know.” I sigh. My ass is so dead. Eric is going to murder me if he finds out what’s happening inside this room right now; his baby sister stroking my cock and sucking me like a fucking pro. I lean my head back and groan in frustration.

“Beckett… I…” she mumbles, not even able to finish her sentence. Jesus Christ, how old is she? Like, eighteen now, if I recall. Eric mentioned having her birthday party here at the house. Is that supposed to be tonight?

I shake my head, looking down at her. At her hand still wrapped around my cock. I grit my teeth when she applies more pressure.

“Let my dick go, Lauren. You wouldn’t know the first thing to do with it,” I semi-lie, because hell, she was just sucking me off like she knew damn well what she was doing. How the fuck does she know how to give a blow job? The idea of her being with other guys makes my insides twist. She looks up at me and her lip trembles. Oh, fuck no, don’t start crying. Jesus Christ, it’s too early for this shit.

“No, we didn’t sleep with each other. I just came in here to wake you up, saw a chance, and took it,” she whispers softly.

I shake my head. “What the hell you mean you ‘saw a chance and took it?’” I raise a brow at her. I knew she had a crush on me when she was younger but hell, girls and crushes change almost every week. I didn’t pay attention to it then, but apparently, I should have. If I had, she sure as shit wouldn’t be in my room right now, sucking my cock. I grab my hair and blow out a breath. This isn’t going to end well if Eric comes walking in.

She bites her lip nervously, looking everywhere but at me. “I’ve always had a crush on you…and I wanted you to be my first,” she mumbles.

My eyebrows reach my hairline while I stare at my best friend’s little sister. “Wait…what?” I stutter.  Did I just hear her clearly? She wants me to fuck her, and not only that, take her virginity? I don’t think so. That is a line even I won’t cross, no matter how tempted I am right now.

Sneak peek

There was a creak, and the door opened. Unbothered, Eliesmore looked up, expecting to see Optimistic. Instead, his eyes met Glashar’s. She was clothed in golden light, and hints of mint and lavender drifted around her as she shut the door. She had bathed or at least cleaned herself from the journey. Her golden hair had a bounce to it, and her eyes were brighter than he’d ever seen them. “Eliesmore.” She shut the door, leaning against it for a moment to ensure no one was listening in. “I have come to tell you about your wound.”

Eliesmore smoothed his fingers over the map, arching an eyebrow as she approached him. “What do you mean?”

Glashar covered her mouth with her hand, her long fingers touching her nose as she considered. He felt like he could see thoughts move through her mind, shifting through what she knew versus what she wanted him to know. “I used all my powers to heal you, yet I fear the Rakhai may retain some control over you.”

Even as she spoke, Eliesmore knew what they could do. They would call to him, draw him out, and try to force him to give up the Green Stone. Before, this knowledge would have frightened him, forcing him to react out of fear. It may have been the strength of the fortress or his companions that reassured him. “I will be aware.”

Glashar nodded, opening her mouth once again. A thought perched on the edge of her lips; she had knowledge that she did not want to escape. Her face turned a shade darker. “Be careful.” She turned to leave, although Eliesmore could tell she had more to say. It burst out of her when she reached the door. She glanced over her shoulder, her sharp chin almost jutting into her thin shoulders. “Beware the Green People. They are up to something.”

Eliesmore froze. “What?”

“I am an Idrain; the Green People are Iaens. I know my kind. We are treacherous. We care only for ourselves and our wishes. Once they are granted, we leave the mortals to their own folly. The Green People set in motion the events of the world long again; now they have come to fruition. There will come a time when you should stop trusting the Iaens.” She opened the door, her eyes repeating the warning as she disappeared.

Eliesmore sat still, eyes glazing over as he stared after her. What should he do? Who should he talk to? Frustrated, he stood and began to pace back and forth, wondering what he had gotten himself into and questioning whom he should trust.

Sneak peek

He heard soft footfalls, and a Green lady emerged. She was six and a half feet tall, at least a foot taller than him, and wore a pale green dress that folded around her body like water with each step she took. Her waist-length hair fell in soft waves and had a gold—or was it a brown—tint to it. Her ears were the size of mortal ears instead of the exceptionally large and pointed ears most Green People had. She was as beautiful as carved crystal and stared at Eliesmore out of light blue eyes with a hint of something darker hidden in them.

Eliesmore did not know what to do. He stood up, thinking he should bow in the presence of a great Iaen, but his legs would not move again. He swallowed hard, his heart flip-flopping under her gaze. Feeling even more uncomfortable, he sputtered, “Who are you?”

“Eliesmore, you have come,” she welcomed him. Her eyes were eager, almost as if she were about to devour him.

“You know my name?” Eliesmore wrinkled his brow in surprise.

“Yes.” She offered no explanation. “I am Ellagine, three-fourths Green Person, one-fourth Tider.” At Eliesmore’s vague expression she added, “I’m the great-great granddaughter of Legone the Swift.”

“Oh.” Eliesmore suspected she wanted him to be impressed with her reference to a hero of old. However, the relationship was too far removed to be of much value. “I am Eliesmore, half Cron, half Tider. Why have you called me here?”

“It is time you know.” Ellagine motioned for him to sit as she knelt beside the stream that lay between them.

“Know what exactly?” Eliesmore sat down again. “I know about the White Steeds and Black Steeds. What more is there?”

“There is much for you to learn about who you are.” Ellagine gave him a kind smile, and her eyes were patient.

Eliesmore opened his mouth to argue with her. As beautiful and wild as she was, she seemed to know entirely too much about him. Hints of a smile touched her lips as she shook her head, and, given over to her beauty, he decided to listen.

“Eliesmore, I have much to tell you. I am not sure what tales your mother shared, although surely you are familiar with the legendary deeds of the Five Warriors?”

Eliesmore nodded, thinking he’d been quick to judge her. He should listen to her words; after all, she was a descendant of a hero of old. Legendary blood ran through her. “Of course, I could repeat those tales back to you of how they destroyed the Ruler and his transformed creatures.”

“Yes,” Ellagine’s voice dropped, and she leaned forward. “They thought they killed the Ruler. However, they only destroyed his physical form and wounded his spirit. The Ruler is a Changer, and he is still very much alive.”

Eliesmore recoiled as if someone had struck him. The word, Changer, had no meaning for him. All the same, he was hit with a cold fear. “What is a Changer?”

Sneak peek

Wind chimes echoed through the near-desolate shrine, the salty air flowing through the open window, blowing out the jasmine incense on the polished nightstand. Thunderclaps roared from the outside, and she couldn’t help but grin to herself as she shut her eyes. Abrupt weather changes, a drift in the squalls. The calm before a brewing storm; that was always Leilana Erovina’s ideal time to meditate as a prolific start to her drawn-out morning.

Minsura’s grounds granted her peace, and sitting as the first heir of the kingdom ensured her guarantee to a wholesome life. Isolated, magicless, a free reign to the plight of idealism and growth. The hymns of her people reverberated in passion and solitude. It was as though this closed-off world was shielded behind the clouds, never to touch the cruel workings on the ground below their pedestal. She heard little about the world furthest east of their country, a place called Adrylis, but she knew that their society was fueled by magic and the power of the Warlords.

For generations beyond known time, essence and being was headed by the Warlords of old, who crafted all humankind and blessed them with the ability to conjure spells to breathe life into their own little world. Magic itself was a mysterious gift that few in Minsura were given; one of the chosen ones had been her own brother, Ennis.

The oldest of the two, he should have been the one seated at the foot of the shrine, leading Minsura as the first heir to his growing land, but his recent growth in power knocked him down several pegs. Magic was forbidden. She was grateful for the shift due to the quiet change of pace and the chance to better her country with her own hands as its chosen princess, but she didn’t understand why it had to be in this manner. Ennis didn’t ask to suddenly develop a life-threatening illness, saved only by what essence resonated within him from birth. He never asked to be turned away by those he loved for something that he couldn’t control.

A light rain pattered against the floor, and she decided to end her session for the day, getting up from her mat and closing the window shut. She rested her head on the windowsill, astonished blue eyes gazing up at the smoky clouds hastily filed in. As much as she loved Minsura and what the shrines had to offer, she couldn’t help but wonder what lied beyond the only land she had ever set foot on.

She couldn’t wait for the rain to settle down for long—she was already late getting back home, and her parents would already have a mound of duties waiting for her. Pressing her tiny hands against the large doors holding her, she pushed them open and watched the rain pour down on the stone building above her. She took a seat on the stairs for a moment, tapping her foot along the ground, her right leg bouncing in an anxious matter. How long was it going to be before the rain slowed up?

Eliesmore is a Blended One, growing up on the edge of the forest of the creatures of the wood. Young, headstrong, and inspired by magical rituals, he spends his time between his overprotective mother and sneaking out to dance with the wild things.
His courage is tested when Eliesmore discovers that he is the One who is meant to save the Four Worlds from the Changers. Unwilling to accept his fate, he turns his back on the prophecy and the futile quest to dissolve the Green Stone.

But Eliesmore will soon learn he cannot escape his destiny. Beset by creatures of the deep and hunted by servants of the Changers, Eliesmore finds his task will test the loyalty of his companions and help him answer the ultimate question:

Can he trust the immortals – or are they the reason the Changers have come to power?

Angela J. Ford

Author bio

Brought up as a bookworm and musician, Angela J. Ford began writing The Four Worlds Series—a fantasy series—at the age of twelve. The storyline of those books was largely based off of the imaginative games she played with her sisters.

Angela originally finished the series when she was sixteen. After college, Angela began to rewrite The Four Worlds Series, bringing it from a child’s daydream to an adventure young and old can enjoy. Since it is inspired by fairy tales, high magic, and epic fantasy, Angela knows you’ll enjoy your adventures within the Four Worlds.

If you happen to be in Nashville, you’ll most likely find her at a local coffee shop, enjoying a white chocolate mocha and furiously working on her next book. Make sure you say hello!
