Author bio

Petra has always possessed a very active imagination. One inherited from her father. Or so she believes. As a child, her father would regale her with fantastic tales of creatures and beasts that lived amidst them. While invisible to her, they were in regular communication with her father. Or so she was told. He built an imaginary world for her that she reveled in for most of her early childhood. He also helped inculcate a love of books in her. As she grew older, her reading list broadened to include anything and everything she could lay her hands on. Her first apartment after college was carefully selected on the basis of its proximity to book shops and the local library. Over the years, no matter how busy life got, Petra would always have a stack of  books by her bedside, to be read during moments snatched from her studies, her job and other activities of life. She has a secondary passion that she built a career on. For years, she would imagine stories and tales in her head, sometimes sketching out detailed characters and events. Inspiration would come from traveling, reading a great book, watching a fun movie or TV show or even just a conversation. Occasionally, if she felt let down by the ending of a promising book, she would imagine an alternative and more satisfactory ending for herself.

Then a few years ago, she started jotting down little snippets of stories every now and then, mainly to stop obsessing over them. Eventually, encouraged by her husband, she embarked on a mission –  to write a short story. Though she worked long and hard at it, the short story never did get completed. Once she started writing in earnest, even a few stolen hours a week, the stories kept pouring out of her.  She found that the labor and discipline of putting her thoughts down on paper could not keep up with her active imagination. Before long, she had compiled a list of novels in various stages of completion, but none complete. What she needed, she told herself, was discipline. It took her another year to complete her first book, The Mercenary,  primarily because she could never quite banish the other story ideas that seemed to pop up in her head at regular intervals. The book, a tale set in a world far away, belongs to the Science Fiction genre. Her husband, encouraging as always, advised her to complete her half-written Urban Fantasy novel and publish that first, suggesting that the genre of Urban Fantasy might enjoy a wider audience.

For Petra, it has been a long journey and a dream decades in the making to come to this point. She’s very excited and a tad anxious to finally publish her first book. She very much hopes that people love her quirky characters and vivid stories as much as she loved putting them down on paper.

Trailer

Sneak peek

“I promised myself if I ever got out of that hell, I would never rely on another person for anything ever again. But you’re the only one who brings me a sense of peace and comfort, and that terrifies me. I don’t want to rely on you, Tom. But I can’t seem to help myself.”

Her words both warmed and chilled him. He removed his hand from the wall near her hip to palm her cheek and felt some of the chill dissipate when she pressed into his touch. “Leaning on someone for comfort doesn’t mean you’re weak, sweetheart. But I understand where you’re coming from; you want to be able to protect yourself.” He felt the same way, which was why these feelings for her confused him. Whenever he considered leaving the CRF, he only thought about how to look after himself, but she changed everything. A life of loneliness no longer appealed.

“You also make me feel strong,” she told him. “In addition to the peace and comfort, I mean.”

“Yeah?”

She nodded. “And you teach me things. It may have been a diversion at first, but I think you enjoyed training me.”

His grin was automatic. “Oh, I more than enjoyed it.” He fucking loved it.

“What did you enjoy most?” she asked, a smile in her voice. So much better than the sadness lurking there before. He liked playing with flirtatious Amelia.

“Everything.” From the gun stance lessons to rolling around with her on the ground, he enjoyed every minute. If he died soon, those would be the memories he’d miss most. And their one explosive night together.

“All right, but what did you like teaching me most?”

He ran his thumb over her bottom lip. “Defensive moves, even though you about killed me.”

“How’s that?” Her mouth curled down at the edges, and he traced it with his thumb.

“ ‘Straddle me again,’ ” he quoted. “Ever say that to me again, and I’ll well and truly straddle you.”

Arousal darkened her gaze. “I think I’d like that.”

Sneak peek

I move frequently—but gain no distance.

I am warm, moist, and dark but give no comfort.

I can stretch and shrink, giving or taking at will, bringing both pain and pleasure with each.

“If God wanted you to tie the knot, he’d give you a near-death experience to better appreciate life, along with a craving for procreation. Then he’d smother your soul with the essence of venison, squirrel, frog legs, taters, and beer, to attract a likely counterpart from the sticks. No, wait. The latter has already happened, hasn’t it? Sorry.” Ethan narrowly kept his balance on the green-slicked, handmade bricks leading up the two-story, mauve-colored Victorian. If his 210-pound mass ended up sprawled on the steps, no doubt the picture would be splashed all over the precinct by noon with various unsavory captions.

“Maybe you should try it. The stick up your ass has to cause at least minor discomfort.” Larrick’s early-morning snark was a common greeting.

“Hey, I’m a normal guy.” Ethan glared over his shoulder.

Larrick snorted.

“Still wet from our early-morning storm. Watch your step, it’s slippery.” Scanning the myriad amorphous shadows lurking in the wood line, realization struck that he and his partner were sitting ducks if a sniper perched among the loblolly pine and oak trees lining the front and side yards.

Larrick’s reply came in equal measure of soft tones. “Either that or a large flock of birds dropped in recently to help her redecorate. Great detective work.”

“Bird droppings are—”

“Are sought after for facials. Especially the Japanese Nightingale shit.”

“Only you would know that.” Ethan adjusted his tie, an acknowledgment of the apprehension filling his mind.

“Are we whispering because your paranoid gut can’t assimilate food well enough to distinguish indigestion from an outside threat? This woman lives alone, gonna think we’re a couple of perverts and be liable to shoot us.”

“Word has it she’s a pacifist.”

“Fine. You’re one to talk about signs—dragging my ass to a stranger’s house at this ungodly morning hour to knock on the door and ask, ‘Lady, are you all right? We’re police detectives who received an anonymous tip you might have a hangnail. Perhaps we could lend you a pair of nail clippers?’” Derision and humor warred for dominance in Larrick’s tone, yet his sharp gaze continually scanned the perimeter in consideration of his partner’s unarticulated hunch. Yin and yang, they fit together, a clean-cut detective and his partner whose hair length had passed regulation specs weeks ago.

“You know this isn’t the first tip we’ve gotten, not to mention the fact that the other leads were solid and led to arrests. And while we’re at it, why don’t you step to the side? Standard police procedure when approaching an unknown situation.” Ethan turned sideways, standing by the door with his hand poised to knock on the solid oak. He hesitated. Moisture coated his palms, a rare occurrence. Scrutinizing the interior through the door’s narrow sidelights yielded nothing more than expected. Elegantly upholstered furniture, gleaming hardwood floors, and delicate bric-a-brac adorning the thick mantle and each side table completed the sophisticated picture. “Don’t see any problem. Maybe she’s fallen and can’t get to a phone.”

“You expected an old lady brandishing her curling iron? As for leads, I get mine from three-dimensional people while you get yours from a bunch of ones and zeroes. Why can’t our IT department trace your anonymous texts further than the loony bin? Though that’s probably appropriate, since your secret admirer’s last present consisted of a flower basket bigger than my TV, along with fur-lined cuffs. I’ve never laughed so hard I pissed myself. I thought that was hogwash, a myth made up by old ladies.” Larrick leaned over the iron railing to peer through the window. “Can’t see squat, bottom sill’s too high.”

“As my partner, you’re supposed to have my back, not stab me in the back. You didn’t have to broadcast it through the whole department by hanging the cuffs from the sprinkler system with a bunch of roses twined in them. Now my brothers won’t let up, and I’ve been subscribed to every kinky magazine known to the publishing world. You think I should know why some whacko chose me for their personal marionette?” Ethan suppressed a shudder before his partner gained more verbal ammunition. If his suspicions were correct, his informant was, in fact, a beautiful enigma with waist-length, chestnut hair and an emerald gaze capable of melting steel.

“Maybe because you were the youngest to make detective? Rising star, golden boy, and all that shit.”

“No. Probably afraid your redneck ways would rub off on them, or maybe because I’m the biggest sap.” Ethan’s gut rumbled, more of a warning sign from a well-heeled intuition than hunger. “Larrick, this doesn’t feel right.” Behind him, the slide of metal on leather let him know his partner just palmed his Glock. Three years of working together circumvented the formality of dissecting gut reactions.

A creak of leather sole betrayed Larrick’s backtracking to scrutinize the surroundings. “Side windows are lower. I’ll take a look.”

“Hood of her BMW is cold. Didn’t go anywhere recently.” Larrick’s harsh whisper halted a nearby squirrel scampering up a tree, its head cocked to one side while studying the strange human interlopers.

Sunshine warmed the first spring buds on the low shrubbery bordering the walkway to complete the idyllic setting. Nothing but peace and serenity, yet Ethan’s heart hammered against his ribcage like an aggressive punk drummer. With his partner disappearing around the corner, he again scanned the perimeter while the morning’s corrupted equanimity formed a sour wad in his chest. A lazy March breeze combed its cool fingers through his short hair while the deep foreboding received with the initial text message blossomed into multiple horrific scenarios, leaving one of them a corpse, their life’s essence forming macabre shapes on gleaming hardwood floors.

“I see bare feet beyond the kitchen island. Toes up. Probably female.” Larrick’s disembodied whisper just provided probable cause. “Backup?”

Sneak peek

I would like to believe that Samuel “Blue” Donahue and I are one of the great and forever loves that I read about when I was growing up: Anthony and Cleopatra, Jamie and Claire, Roark and Eve. Certainly our first encounter was fate. He was a police officer, I was a victim. He rescued me from the Rattler Kings Motorcycle Gang. I rescued him from a life without true love.

Now, we were together, planning our life, surrounded by family and friends. Our unborn child was going to be encircled by the unconditional love that we had found within ourselves.

Maeve, Blue’s sister, was downstairs in her own apartment scurrying about, trying to decide what to wear to impress the oh so dark, oh so handsome, Derick Black, ATF Agent Extraordinaire. She had been enamoured of him from the beginning. She had been a true friend, so I was reciprocating by doing some matchmaking. When she first met me, Maeve had refused to treat me as if I was damaged, using her nonstop talking and snarky comments to push me from my fear fogged brain that kept me trapped in silence when I first came to the house on Bardstown Road. Now that house was my home.

Tonight, we were having Derick over for dinner. Maeve had commented more than once that she would like to get to know him better, as she had waggled her eyebrows suggestively. Maeve had quickly insinuated herself as my friend, with her huge heart and concern about people.  She was a nurse, finishing her graduate degree as a nurse practitioner in midwifery.  All her patients loved her, and so did I,

Part of my fear that was so difficult to remove from my subconscious thoughts, was the memory of my best friend’s murder. I could remember as if it was yesterday, the glint of the blade against Donna’s neck, the spatters of bright red blood on the walls, then Jag’s voice whispering in my ear, “Don’t tell anyone what you seen or your momma’s dead.” I still had horrific nightmares where I would wake up, screaming, with Blue’s arms wrapped so tightly around me I couldn’t move.

I would always miss Donna. Our childhood friendship had kept us together for so long that we could finish each other’s sentences; we could practically read each other’s minds. As my life changed so drastically, I missed being able to talk to her. However, I knew she would have loved Maeve as much as I did and I was comforted by that knowledge.

I was excited about Derick coming over tonight.  He had been a good friend and mentor to Blue and he was always gallant to Maeve and me in a dark brooding alpha man kind of way.

Maeve had been flitting about all day, helping me clean the apartment, and talking about how much she liked Derick.  She kept hinting that he might be “quirky” in bed, but she refused to elaborate. Now she was downstairs trying to decide what to wear.

It was obvious to Blue and me that Maeve and Derick were interested in each other, so we had decided to push that along a bit by getting them together. Now she was downstairs again, changing her clothes again so she could impress him.

The doorbell rang so Blue went to get it while I finished getting ready. I still struggled at times talking to strangers or people I didn’t like, but with close friends I only had problems if I got overwhelmed by my feelings, so I was relaxed and comfortable that Maeve and Derick were joining us for dinner.  They knew me very well and if I acted unusual or different than normal, they understood the reasons and didn’t question me.

Blue clattered downstairs just as Maeve opened her apartment door, so they both greeted Derick at the same time. I heard the three of them coming back up the stairs so I gave one last brush of my hair and walked into the living room.

Derick looked at Blue and me with a concerned expression.  “Krystal, Sam,” he said, “I need to talk to you.”

His serious tone made me nervous, so I immediately went to Blue and curled against his side. He would always be my savior and protector in my eyes and, I think, in his. He immediately wrapped his arms around me and I felt safe once again.

Derick suggested we go into the living room to talk, but I insisted we go into the kitchen so I could finish getting the table set and dinner ready. I announced, “Blue’s made his famous Parmesan Lime Grilled Corn and his White Chili.  He used his mom’s recipe for the chili so it’s gotta be good. Maeve and I made a salad.” A dinner party was something I had never done so I smiled nervously at Blue and started pulling silverware out of drawers and the chunky pottery bowls that we had bought a few days ago at the ByBee Pottery Outlet just for this party.

“Sam, Krystal,” He said, interrupting me, “There’s been some chatter from our informants that some men in the Favoloras Cartel from Mexico have come into town.  Word has it they are gunning for the people that shut down their pipeline for drugs and guns into this area.”

I stilled, almost not breathing and looked at Blue.  He took two steps and had me pressed hard against his body.  He put his lips against my ear and whispered, “It doesn’t matter. You and the baby belong to me. I will always protect both of you.  Every breath in your body is mine to take care of forever.  You will always be safe with me.”  My face was against his chest and I heard his steady slow heartbeat. I smelled his spicy cologne with a faint hint of his own musk underneath. My body knew these signals intimately and I relaxed almost unconsciously.

“Unfortunately,” Derick said, “I have some more news. Krystal, I got a call from Captain Frank about twenty minutes ago.  I told him not to call you because I wanted to be with you when I told you.  The police had a call to the Riverside Trailer Homes this afternoon.  A cavalcade of cars went through the park today with guns.  They shot up everyone’s trailers from the entrance to the road where your mom lived. A few people were injured, and one person was pronounced dead at the scene.”

The bowl in my hand crashed to the ground as I sagged, unable to support myself on nerveless legs.  I remembered what Jag had said about coming after my mom.  But he was in jail.  How would this cartel know about my mom?   We weren’t particularly close anymore, but I loved her.  It could not be her that was dead. Maybe someone I knew. Maybe Mom’s new boyfriend . . .  my mind kept going in useless circles.

Blue scooped me into his arms and held me tightly against him amid the broken pieces of blue speckled pottery.  “Shhhh” he murmured in my ear, “It’s all going to be okay.”

Derick said, “I’m sorry, Krystal. I’m sorry to have to tell you that your mom died this afternoon.  Also, from the description of the cars and people it looked like not only was it the Favoloras Cartel, but it was their leader, Aaron Favoloras, who actually shot your mom.  That means he’s calling the kill as a blood debt to him personally.”

I knew I should say something, but I felt once more as if my throat had a huge blockage that words couldn’t pass. How was I going to be able to deal with my mom dying? How was I going to deal with more violence and death? I slid out of Blue’s arms, and sat heavily onto the floor. I looked at the broken bowls and whispered, “I need to pick this up, I guess we can just use our regular bowls.”

#CensoredKrystal

Statement from Claire Lalique regarding the banning of SHATTERED KRYSTAL from Amazon.

I awoke this morning with my publisher telling me Amazon banned my book because “its content was in violation of their content guidelines”. I wanted to burst into tears.
I don’t know what that means to have Amazon ban my book.
What I do know is that my book is extremely personal to me.
SHATTERED KRYSTAL is my first book, my debut novel. Each word in it was chosen specifically. I believed that particular word at that place in the story was best suited to convey the emotion and gravity necessary for the reader to be caught up in the events portrayed.

I am devastated that this book isn’t on Amazon. I buy from Amazon. I made the decision to publish exclusively on Amazon. I wanted to publish on Amazon. Why would they ban my book? There are far more explicit books than mine on Amazon.
It seems to me that Amazon is treating erotic writers unfairly. It is after all a category or genre that they publish. Other erotic writers have been told that their book will continue to be banned unless all explicit sex or violence is completely removed. This seemingly random banning of erotic books seemed to have started in January 2011. In no other genre have I found this erratic behavior by Amazon censors.

I chose to write erotic romance. By definition it is explicit sexually. I chose that genre because I wanted to write about a very broken person who was healed by love. Erotica seemed to most easily fit that story line. It’s true my book has a (single) rape. It is that event that causes my heroine to be broken. It was written as a horrific act perpetuated by evil men. It wasn’t glorified or made to seem acceptable. This subject has been used in many wonderful books that are considered classical literature.

So finally, my last thoughts, I am sorry Amazon readers are not able to buy my book. I felt when I wrote it, that it made a statement about how resilient women can be, especially if they have love behind them, even if it was couched in erotic book language. I think all you Amazon readers would have liked it, but for now it can only be gotten on Smashwords.

I hope my friends and readers would share this and request their friends to share with a request for their friends to share and so forth and so forth. Amazon must realize that readers will not accept this behavior from them.

This is where you can buy my book for 99 cents.

Unlikely In Love by Susan Mac Nicol
Short story trilogy

Genre: contemporary romance1dc99-addtogoodreads

Synopsis

Three delightful short stories about how love begins in the most unexpected ways.

Meet Elliot and Dan in ‘Benchpressed’
City planner Elliot meets personal trainer Dan and between them, they whip the gym into shape…
“I happen to think you have a very nice belly,” Dan murmured. “It makes a change from the usual devotion to keeping a six pack.” His tone went dreamy. “I like a man with a bit of meat on him.”
Oh, fuck me. That sounded a bit awkward, even to me. My body flushed with heat and I cleared my throat.

Meet Davey and Gus in ‘Dear Davey’
Agony Aunt columnist Davey has an unfortunate habit of causing mayhem for fellow worker Gus. He also has no filter. Remind you of someone?
“Oh, and I’m sorry I set fire to your waste bin yesterday,” I muttered.
“Who else would it have been?” he said. “Do I need to take out company hazard pay when I go out with you?”
I huffed, flicking my hair back from my forehead. “Puhleaze. It’d be worth every penny, I promise.”
Behind me, Gus’s cologne invaded my nostrils and I closed my eyes, inhaling his scent.

Meet Cooper and Robbie in ‘Banana Appeal’
An errant gecko brings Graphic artist Cooper meets neighbour Robbie together. There may also be a banana involved.
I took a step forward, brandishing the banana toward him as if entreating him to eat it. Robbie took a step back, a wary look crossing his face. I wondered whether he’d expected me to ask him to fellate it. Because that would have been a complete waste when my dick was willing to be wrapped between those full lips. The banana didn’t stand a fucking chance if I got in there first.

Claire has has many living reincarnations in her life time before becoming an author. She has been a poet, a healer, midwife, nurse, artisan, mother, grandmother, wife and lover.
